Fowl Play
Fowl Play is an unexpected relationship between figure and bird where the atmophere swings between whimsy and intrigue. The compositions are frozen moments suggesting a narrative, with swans often acting as central characters of the story. Last changed on Oct 05, 2008. This album contains 11 items. |

Kanji
The earliest recordings of kanji were discovered on tortoise shells and cow bones, approximately 2000-1500 BC in the Yellow River region of China. Over time, these symbols became more abstract and complex, growing into approximately 50,000 characters, which eventually migrated throughout the Orient. Kanji is not only a language, it is an art form. Its calligraphy derives from an ancient tradition which continues to develop in modernist styles. I began painting kanji during a two year stay in Hokkaido, Japan. The history of how each character evolved fascinates me. In my work the script is often abstracted to the point of illegibility, but the essence of its meaning may be understood. Last changed on Jan 08, 2008. This album contains 35 items. |

Equine
Horses are a seductive subject matter. Aside from their muscular beauty, their historical and mythical qualities have inspired a long tradition of artists. Initially this series was about light as much as it was about horses. Both my technique and palette altered in order to capture a more luminous quality. My former approach with thick opague layers was replaced by layered glazes and pigment stains. Gravity became as important as the brush.

Holy Cow
India made an indelible impression upon me. The colours, smells and heat were all overwhelming, inescapable. The extremes of beauty and decay were a constant reminder of the cycle of life. Here the brahamas are in harmony in the centre of chaos. Whether they sit in the middle of hell traffic in Delhi, or bathe in the holy river of the Ganges, they remain serene and contemplative. In Dharamsala, I discovered a paint medium used by the local artists of Buddhist Thangka painting. The brilliant pigments reflect the sensations and intensity of India, much like the magnificent hues of saries under a intense sun. Last changed on Aug 17, 2008. This album contains 24 items. |

Myths East and West
This series has many sources: a Buddhist temple in Java, Hindu sculptures in Varanasi, ruins at the Parthenon. I am drawn to the human form, both natural and mythical. Indo-European rituals and myths involving transformation, of woman into tree or man into half bull or half horse- fancinating stories- may actually be telling us more about human nature and the inner conflicts of the human psyche. My interest lies in the transcendental nature of these stories. Their historical, mystical and spiritual qualities stir the imagination. Last changed on Mar 10, 2007. This album contains 9 items. |
